In November 1917 the Lambeth Auxiliary Hospital transferred from Homedale in Upper Norwood to Woodhall, a large property which had been the home of the patent medicine manufacturer (especially known for his fruit salts) James Crossley Eno (1827-1915).  Mr Eno had died on 11th May 1915 and his family agreed to lend the mansion, which stood in 17 acres of gardens and grounds, to the British Red Cross Society for use as an auxiliary hospital.

The Lambeth Red Cross Hospital opened in December 1917 with 57 beds (3 more were added later).  It remained a Class B hospital affiliated to the Mile End Military Hospital.

The nursing staff consisted of 2 trained nurses and 5 full-time and 49 part-time members of the Lambeth Voluntary Aid Detachment.

The Hospital received the gift of a donkey, which was greatly appreciated by the patients.

The Hospital closed on 31st January 1920, the last of the Country of London Branch of the British Red Cross Society to do so.  During its operational lifetime on both sites, some 2,011 patients had been admitted.  None had died.


Present status (September 2010)

The house was destroyed by a V1 rocket in July 1944 during WW2.  The area has been redeveloped and now contains a private estate - Woodhall - built in the 1960s.
