Convalescent (military)
The St Laurence V.A.D. Hospital
originally opened as a convalescent home for sick and wounded
servicemen. It was under the direction of Dr J. Storrs Brookfield
and was run at the entire expense of supporters living in the
neighbourhood.
The establishment was later offered to the Essex branch of the British Red Cross Society, and it became a Class B hospital (i.e. for ambulant patients) with 15-20 beds. The patients were cared for by the local Voluntary Aid Detachment.
In 1917 the Hospital had 16 beds and was affiliated to Colchester Military Hospital.
It presumably closed at the end of 1918.

The Hall is still in use for community events.
The Church Hall (above and below) is actually two halls - a large and a small one.
The Hall is tucked away on the edge of the churchyard, with the Upminster War Memorial nearby.
