In 1851 Dr Emanuel Pacifico, a wealthy physician, donated funds for almshouses to be built for poor elderly Sephardic Jews. The seven almshouses were erected on land at the southeast corner of London Fields. In 1880 the almshouses came under the management of the Spanish & Portuguese Jews' Congregation. Around 1897 the buildings were sold and the Congregation reimbursed. The almspeople were transferred to the new Barrow's Almshouses in Mile End, provided by the Barrow's Charity. Current statusThe almshouses were demolished in 1900.In 1904 the LCC built the Darcy Buildings on their site. |
