In 1914 the investment banker Robert
Fleming
and his wife provided an auxiliary hospital for convalescent officers
at their home in Grosvenor Square. By December 1914 all 10 beds
were occupied.
Later, the Hospital had 14 beds and was affiliated to Queen Alexandra's Military Hospital. Present status (June 2010) Most of the houses in Grosvenor Square hadve now been demolished and replaced with hotels, embassies and apartment blocks. The site of No. 27 Grosvenor Square is occupied by the American Embassy, which constitutes the west side of the Square. |

The Grade II listed American Embassy opened in 1960. It has nine storeys, three of which are below ground level. Fixed on the roof of the central portion of the building is a large gilded aluminium bald eagle designed by Theodore Roszak (1907-1981). The sculpture weighs some 2,000 lb (900 kilos) and its wingspan is 37 feet (11.2 metres). |
