The Chelsea V.A.D. Hospital opened on 17th March 1915 in a house lent
by Lady Morrison-Bell. Designated as a Class A hospital, it
had 80 beds for servicemen and was affiliated to Queen Alexandra's Military Hospital in Millbank.
The Hospital had a bathroom on each floor except the second. The conservatory had been converted into a small operating theatre with overhead lighting, heated pipes and a paved floor.
The nursing staff consisted of 3 trained nurses, and 8 full-time and 24 part-time members of the Chelsea Voluntary Aid Detachment (V.A.D.).
The Hospital closed on 30th April 1919. Of the 2,010 patients during its operational lifetime, only 3 had died.
