The Beckenham Maternity Hospital was opened by the local authority in December 1939. Known locally as the Stone Park Maternity Hospital, it was immensely popular and, at one time, a third of all the babies in Bromley were delivered there. During WW2 the building, along with houses in Stone Park Road, was slightly damaged in 1944 by a V1 flying bomb. In 1974 the Hospital had 55 beds. It came under consideration of closure in 1977, as the Regional Health Authority had a surplus of maternity beds in the area. The Hospital finally closed in 1986. Services transferred to the Farnborough Hospital, some eight miles to the south.
The site now contains Ralph Perring Court, a sheltered housing complex of 99 apartments managed by Morden College, which was built in 1991. |
