Following the compulsory purchase by the GLC of the London Master Bakers Benevolent Institution in the late 1960s, the Bakers Benevolent Society decided to build new almshouses elsewhere, further from the city.

The Bakers Villas complex was completed in 1973. It contains a care home - The Mill House - and 49 dwellings for independent living. The latter are located in buildings called The Farmhouse and The Cottage, which contain apartments for single people or married couples. There are also two terraces of bungalows. In all, some 60 people can be accommodated.

Eligible residents are those who have served for 10 years in the baking industry or allied trades, including supermarkets and shops.

The buildings were renovated in 1998.
