ALMSHOUSES OF LONDON
|
---|
In 1883, despite being in her 80s and in poor health, Miss Sarah Ward founded and endowed these almshouses on behalf of the Aged Pilgrims' Friend Society. She lived nearby in Sidney Place and even managed to oversee the building work herself. The almshouses overlooked the temporary iron church of St John's in Franklin Road and the surrounding fields. Each almsperson had two rooms and received an annual stipend of 10 guineas (£10.50). If two sisters were being accommodated, they would share rooms. A warden was employed to look after the residents. Miss Ward died in January 1885. The almshouses continued to be managed by the Aged Pilgrims' Friend Society.
Current statusIn the 1980s the buildings were sold to developers and converted into apartments. |
