The Hospital for Officers at 83 Portland Place opened in June 1915.
The unfurnished house was the property of the Crown and had been placed at the disposal of the British Red Cross Society by its tenant, Mr R.A.D. Fleming, for the duration of its lease (which terminated in January 1918), on condition that the Office of Woods and Forests charged no rent.
The Hospital was financed by the Joint War Committee with the addition of a War Office grant and was furnished with furniture rented from Whiteleys at £100 a year. It had 20 beds for convalescent officers transferred from Queen Alexandra's Military Hospital at Millbank.
The Hospital closed in April 1919. The Office of Woods and Forests had charged no rent during its operational life.Present status (March 2010)
The building is now private residences.
The building is on the corner of Portland Place and Park Crescent but no longer seems to have its own front door.
