Convalescent (military)
In 1916 the house at 19 Hyde Park Gardens was lent by a Mr F. Carbutt for use as an auxiliary Hospital. The property was unfurnished and was equipped by private subscription, Mr Carbutt also contributing £200 towards the redecoration and lighting costs. A new bathroom and WC were installed, paid for privately. Each quarter-year Mr Carbutt donated £112 10 shillings (£112.50) towards rates and taxes.
The Hospital was affiliated to Queen Alexandra's Military Hospital at Millbank and opened in August 1916. It had 21 beds for officers.
The running costs were financed by the usual capitation grant from the War Office and by Mr Fenwick Harrison, whose son Captain Harrison continued the payments after his father's death (it was estimated that, between them, they had contributed some £6,000).
The Hospital closed in May 1919.
Present status (July 2010)
The property has now been converted into apartments.
